Creditworthiness checks
A creditworthiness check assesses a counterparty’s financial capacity to meet obligations using available information. It is a dated assessment, not a guarantee that an individual invoice will be paid.
Distinguish the concepts
Financial capacity, willingness to pay and validity of a claim are different questions. A sound business may dispute defective performance; a customer accepting the invoice may nevertheless lack cash. A score is neither an enforceable title nor permission to publish data indiscriminately. Retain the information source, date, exact legal entity and limitations behind each decision.
Jurisdiction and scope
In Austria and Germany, personal information is subject in particular to the GDPR. A business name does not eliminate personal-data concerns, especially for sole traders. Assess purpose, legal basis and necessary scope. The Bundesbank’s published credit assessment is a distinct institutional procedure cited as background, not a service promised with every collection instruction.
Illustrative business example
Before a large order, a supplier reads a report with a matching name and address. It predates a recent restructuring. The supplier verifies identity and newer information before deciding on terms or security. If payment later becomes overdue, the invoice is assessed on its own facts rather than the historic score alone.
Common questions
Does creditworthiness replace invoice checks?
No. Contract, performance, maturity and objections remain separate.
How long is a report valid?
There is no universal validity period. Consider whether relevant circumstances have changed since the report date.
Does a low score prove fraud?
No. A risk assessment does not establish criminal conduct or justify public accusations.
